A Message from the Principal...

August 2017

At Cottonwood school, we are committed to helping students set and achieve academic and social goals to ensure “Success for Every One.”  We are excited to get our Bobcats back, and look forward to working with the community and our Cottonwood families in the 2017-2018 school year.

We encourage families to wait to speak to the teachers before purchasing school supplies.  We do our best to keep costs to a minimum for our families.  All students will need a backpack, but the majority of supplies are provided.  Donations of items are always welcome (spiral notebooks, dry erase markers, pencils, crayons, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, 3-prong pocket folders, Clorox wipes).

Cottonwood Elementary is proud to provide FREE breakfast, lunch, and fruit/vegetable snack to all of our enrolled students.   Children should arrive at school between 7:20 and 7:45 in order to take advantage of breakfast.  No staff is on duty before 7:20, so please wait until after that time to send your kids.  The playground opens at 7:30.

School hours are 7:55-2:45.  Our recess bell rings at 7:50, and everyone should be settled into their classrooms by 7:55.  Please help your student make punctual attendance a priority.  Each homeroom will start their day with a “Morning Meeting”; we want ALL students to be on time to participate and get their day off to a great start.

A couple of safety notes for dismissal time:  You are encouraged to utilize the parent loop for “drive through” pick-up.  This really is the easiest and quickest way to receive your child.  All our teachers walk their students around the front of the school, to the buses, and then to the parent loop.  They will walk your child right up to your car.  Kindergarten parents are the only ones who need to park for pickup (required to sign children out from the classroom).

However, we do allow other parents who want to park to pick-up along O’Neil Avenue (rather than parking along Kadota).  The procedure is for parents to enter the middle gate to get their children.  Please do not ask your child to come through any gate or leave the campus in any way to go to your vehicle without an adult.   Also, you must use the crosswalk to cross Kadota.  For everyone’s safety, we request that you set the example and take the extra steps to cross with the crossing guard.  Again, parents should accompany their children to the vehicle using the crosswalk.   The staff lot is for staff parking only and will be chained during dismissal time.

We highly encourage all parents to attend our Cottonwood Connections Night on Thursday, August 17, from 6:00-7:30 p.m.  Teachers will discuss goals, procedures, expectations, homework policy, and classroom business; followed by time for your questions and ideas.  We

hope to strengthen the partnership with our Bobcat families and set the foundation for a

successful school year.

We welcome you as partners in education and look forward to a successful year together!
